{"id":393,"date":"2006-01-24T15:46:45","date_gmt":"2006-01-24T15:46:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/34.95.25.178\/maggie\/2006\/01\/24\/silver_lining_anyone\/"},"modified":"2006-01-24T15:46:45","modified_gmt":"2006-01-24T15:46:45","slug":"silver_lining_anyone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.golding.ca\/maggie\/2006\/01\/24\/silver_lining_anyone\/","title":{"rendered":"Silver lining, anyone?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ok, well, my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.golding.ca\/maggie\/archives\/000623.html\">original election prediction<\/a> was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/canadavotes\/\">a little off<\/a>.<br \/>\nThe good news is that there&#8217;s no way the Harper Valley bunch can do much damage, considering that they&#8217;re in an uncomfortable position (for a Conservative party) of having to broker deals with either the slightly leftist Liberals, the all-the-way left Bloc or the so-far-left-left-looks-centrist NDP. So chances are we&#8217;ll get to keep our pot and gay weddings, and we&#8217;re not likely to be scrapping Kyoto or rushing off to Iraq in the immediate future.<br \/>\nThe better news is that the result forced Martin to make an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/story\/canadavotes2006\/national\/2006\/01\/24\/martin_concedes060124.html\">actual decision<\/a> and step down as leader &#8211; so we may finally get genuinely new blood at the Liberal helm. Which means that the party actually stands a chance in the next election, presumably scheduled for later this year (unless the Tories have actually learned something from their last <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Minority_governments_in_Canada#Joe_Clark\">minority fiasco<\/a>).<br \/>\nThe best news?
