The magnifying glass question

Colin wants to know how magnifying glasses work.

The short answer is that they are made of a special material that is shaped in a special way. The shape of the material (usually glass but it can be plastic) makes the light bend in a specific way. This bending of light makes things look bigger.

You can get an example of this effect just by sticking your forearm into a bathtub when its full of water. Your arm will look bent but it's just a trick of light.

Actually, magnifying glasses make your eye bigger - if you look at yourself in the mirror while holding up a magnifying glass you will see what I mean.
